Tesla’s AI Approach for Reaching Full-Self Driving

Elon Musk is extremely confident that level 5 or essentially complete autonomy will happen.

What’s interesting in his approach is that he pushes for use of cameras, as opposed to their competitors who use LiDAR.

For Tesla, cameras are the keys to the future and Elon Musk sees a future when cameras will enable Tesla to see through the most adverse weather situations.

To successfully use cameras, they developed a HydraNet – Object Detection Network’s Architecture.

Multiple heads are specialized neural networks for image segmentation. They do more than 1000 different tasks (e.g. Stop sign detection) because, for each detecting task, there can be multiple subtasks that come with it.

Tesla already has capabilities that leverage AI in real-time like Autopilot, Smart Summon, and Active Safety.

However, there’s still work to be done to reach Full-Self Driving…
