Pardon my ignorance, but I’m confused as to who makes Tesla’s batteries and googling hasn’t helped much.
I know Tesla has partners such as Panasonic, LG Chem and CATL.
However, where I get confused is when Elon starts talking about the Gigafactory, cell/chemistry innovation (such as what they announced on Battery Day), improvements to manufacturing, scaling up production etc. All of that makes it seem like they own their own production lines, factories, manufacturing methods, etc. But… do they actually? Do they fully own any production line? If not, how do they control all of those variables? And do they plan to transition to full vertical integration at some point?
Also, is Giga Nevada the only Tesla factory that makes batteries? (or rather buys them from Panasonic on-site)?
Please help me understand how it works.
